Bookish Matters

The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.

George

"Boy George is a man, isn't he?" said Rachel.
"Yes, he is," said Nick.
"Not like George Eliot."
"No, not at all."
-Alan Hollinghurst, The Line of Beauty

I've decided George Eliot is the appropriate thing to read after The Line of Beauty. I'm 135 pages into Middlemarch.

  1. I totally posted this Hollinghurst bit on my blog! Great minds think alike. Are George Eliot jokes EVER not funny?

But what I want to know is how is Middlemarch treating you? Aren't there some really powerful and beautiful and helplessly meandering lines in there? I really think I should read The Mill on the Floss this summer...
